Start with the look you want
A custom Chrome theme brings together a background image and colors for browser elements such as the frame, tabs, and toolbar. Before opening the editor, decide whether you want a calm minimalist look, a vivid color scheme, or a theme based on a favorite photo.
This guide focuses on design choices—what to use and why—rather than repeating every click in our step-by-step Chrome theme tutorial.
Design as you read. Open the free Chrome Theme Builder, upload an image, and try the suggestions below in the live preview.
Open the Theme Builder →Choose a background that works in Chrome
The builder turns your selected image into the New Tab background. It creates a 1920 × 1080 background output, so a landscape-oriented image is usually a practical starting point. A portrait photo can work too, but its edges may be cropped to fill the screen.
- Keep the focal point clear: landscapes, patterns, illustrations, and uncluttered photos are good candidates.
- Consider what sits on top: the New Tab page may contain search and shortcut elements, depending on Chrome settings.
- Use an image you have permission to use: your own photographs or properly licensed artwork are sensible choices.
- Try different positions: choose Center, Top, Bottom, Left, or Right in the builder to keep important details visible.
The tool accepts common image formats including JPG, PNG, and WebP. It processes your image locally in the browser rather than uploading the photo to ChromeThemer's server.
Build a coordinated color palette
Your background is only one part of the design. The colors surrounding the tabs and address bar determine whether the theme feels cohesive and whether interface elements remain easy to see.
Option 1: Let Auto wizard choose a starting palette
After uploading an image, use Auto wizard to generate matching colors. This is the quickest way to explore a palette based on the photo. Treat the suggested colors as a starting point, not a rule.
Option 2: Fine-tune colors manually
Switch to Manual to adjust the theme colors yourself. Aim for a clear distinction between active and inactive tabs, and check whether the toolbar icons and text remain readable against their backgrounds. The Advanced color settings section provides additional controls that are included in the exported theme manifest.
Three simple color directions to try
- Nature-inspired: a forest or mountain image with muted green and charcoal browser colors.
- Warm and bright: a sunrise image with soft cream, coral, and deeper brown accents.
- Minimal and dark: a subtle geometric image with dark gray frames and restrained accent colors.
These are creative examples, not presets built into the tool. You can make each combination with the available color controls.
Check the design before exporting
The Live preview displays an illustrative Chrome mockup and updates as you change your theme. Look at the active tab, inactive tab, toolbar, bookmarks area, and New Tab background together.
- Can you distinguish the active tab from the rest?
- Are icons and text legible on the toolbar?
- Does the image still look good after cropping?
- Does the theme feel comfortable rather than distracting?
The mockup is illustrative; the exact appearance can differ by Chrome version, operating system, and browser configuration. Check the installed theme in Chrome before deciding it's finished.
Download and install your custom theme
- Enter a name in the Theme name field.
- Choose Download theme ZIP when you're happy with the design.
- Extract the ZIP file to a folder on your computer.
- Open
chrome://extensionsin Google Chrome. - Enable Developer mode and choose Load unpacked.
- Select the extracted theme folder to load the theme.
Chrome may display a developer-mode notice when you load unpacked files. Only install files you trust. If you want more detail, read our complete beginner tutorial.
Common design mistakes to avoid
- Low contrast: light icons on light toolbar colors can be hard to see. Recheck readability in the preview and installed theme.
- Busy imagery: a highly detailed image can compete with New Tab controls. Try a calmer crop or a simpler picture.
- Ignoring cropping: a subject near the edge might disappear when the image fills the available space.
- Changing too much at once: start with automatic colors, then adjust one element at a time.
