Start with these quick checks
First, confirm that you are using desktop Google Chrome. Chrome themes and the Load unpacked workflow described here are desktop features. Menu labels may vary by version, operating system, or managed browser profile.
- Restart Chrome and open a new tab to see whether the theme appears.
- Check Settings → Appearance to see whether a theme is active or whether Chrome offers a reset option.
- Make sure you are using the same Chrome profile where you installed the theme.
- Temporarily check whether a New Tab extension is replacing Chrome's normal New Tab page.
- If you created a theme with our builder, confirm that you extracted the ZIP before attempting to install it.
Do not remove extensions or reset settings blindly: first identify which part of the browser is not displaying correctly.
Problem 1: Chrome will not load your downloaded theme
Our Chrome Theme Builder downloads a ZIP containing a Chrome theme package. It does not install the theme automatically.
- Download your theme ZIP and extract it to a folder you can find.
- Open
chrome://extensionsin desktop Chrome. - Turn on Developer mode if that option is available.
- Select Load unpacked.
- Choose the extracted folder that contains
manifest.json, not the ZIP file or an outer folder.
If Chrome displays an error, read the message carefully. An invalid manifest, missing image file, or unsupported setting can prevent a theme from loading. Re-download the package and try again if files appear incomplete. Chrome may show a developer-mode warning for locally loaded themes; only load packages you created or trust.

Problem 2: The theme installs but the colors do not change
- Check the active profile: Chrome profiles have separate settings and themes.
- Check for another theme: Applying a different theme can replace your previous one.
- Open a new tab: Some appearance changes are easier to see in a new window or tab.
- Compare the right areas: The browser frame, toolbar, and tabs are different from the content of websites.
- Try a fresh export: Reopen the builder, choose a noticeable color, and download the theme again to confirm the result.
Chrome's visual appearance can vary across operating systems and browser versions. The builder's live preview is an illustrative mockup, not an exact reproduction of every Chrome interface.
Problem 3: The theme background is missing or cropped
Our builder uses your photo as a New Tab background. If the image is missing, first check whether an extension is replacing Chrome's standard New Tab page. If the image appears but looks different from the preview, it may be cropped to fit your screen.
- Try a landscape image with extra space around the subject.
- In the builder, change Background positioning between center, top, bottom, left, or right.
- Download and install a newly exported theme after making changes.
- Test in a regular New Tab page, not on a website that supplies its own background.

Problem 4: Your custom theme disappeared or changed
If your browser looks different after a restart or an update, check whether you changed Chrome profiles, applied another theme, or enabled an extension that alters the New Tab page. In Settings → Appearance, look for the currently applied theme or the option to reset to Chrome's default appearance.
If you still have your exported ZIP, extract it again and follow the installation steps. Keep a copy of the original theme ZIP in case you want to reinstall it later.
Problem 5: The theme builder does not accept your image
The builder accepts common image formats including JPG, PNG, and WebP. If an image does not load, try another file in one of these formats. Confirm that the file is an actual image and not simply a renamed document. A large or damaged file can also cause problems on some devices.
Our builder processes images locally in your browser, so you do not need to send your personal photo to our server to generate a theme.
Problem 6: Developer mode or theme settings are unavailable
School and workplace browsers may be managed by an administrator. Managed policies can restrict extension installation, appearance settings, or the ability to load unpacked packages. If Chrome says a setting is managed, ask your administrator what is permitted rather than attempting to bypass the restriction.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Chrome theme not showing on websites?
Chrome themes generally change browser interface colors and the New Tab background; they do not restyle the content of websites you visit.
Can I install a Chrome theme ZIP directly?
Not with our builder's workflow. Extract the ZIP first, then use the extracted theme folder in Chrome's Load unpacked interface.
Why does the theme look different from the preview?
The preview is illustrative. Chrome's interface and the visible crop of your background can differ depending on your screen, operating system, and browser version.
Will resetting my theme delete bookmarks?
No. Restoring Chrome's default appearance does not delete your saved bookmarks.
Do these steps work on Chrome for Android or iPhone?
No. The custom desktop Chrome theme installation workflow is not supported in mobile Chrome in the same way.
