How to Install a Custom Chrome Theme

Downloaded a theme ZIP from ChromeThemer? Follow these steps to extract your files, load your theme into Google Chrome, and check that it works.

Before you begin

ChromeThemer’s builder creates a downloadable theme ZIP. Unlike installing a theme from the Chrome Web Store, this method requires you to extract the ZIP and load the theme folder into Chrome yourself. These instructions are for desktop Google Chrome; mobile Chrome does not support this same unpacked-theme workflow.

Need a theme first? Create one from your own photo with the free Chrome Theme Builder, then return here to install it.

Open Chrome Theme Builder →

Step 1: Download your theme ZIP

In the Chrome Theme Builder, choose an image, adjust your colors, and click Download theme ZIP. Save the file somewhere you can find it, such as your Downloads folder.

Step 2: Extract the ZIP file

  1. Find the downloaded ZIP in your file manager.
  2. Use your computer’s Extract All or Unzip option.
  3. Open the extracted folder and locate the folder containing manifest.json.

Chrome needs the extracted theme files, not the ZIP itself. If extraction creates an extra outer folder, select the inner folder that actually contains manifest.json when you reach the Load unpacked step.

Step 3: Open Chrome’s Extensions page

Open Google Chrome on your computer. Type chrome://extensions into the address bar and press Enter. This is Chrome’s extensions management page, where unpacked themes can also be loaded.

Step 4: Turn on Developer mode

Find the Developer mode switch on the Extensions page and turn it on. This reveals the Load unpacked control. Chrome may display a developer-mode warning for manually loaded items; only load files you trust.

Step 5: Load the extracted theme

  1. Click Load unpacked.
  2. Browse to the extracted theme folder that contains manifest.json.
  3. Select that folder and confirm.
  4. Wait for Chrome to apply the theme, then open a New Tab to inspect the result.

Look at the frame, toolbar, tabs, and New Tab background. The builder’s live preview is an illustration, so the actual appearance can vary slightly by Chrome version and window size.

If the theme does not install

  • “Manifest file is missing”: you may have selected the outer folder instead of the one containing manifest.json.
  • Chrome cannot read the files: make sure you extracted the ZIP fully before loading it.
  • Theme looks different from the preview: check it in a New Tab and at your normal window size; image cropping and browser appearance can vary.
  • You changed the design: download a fresh ZIP from the builder and load the newly extracted theme folder.
  • Managed browser: school or workplace policies may restrict developer-mode installation.

If the problem persists, review your extracted files and Chrome’s on-screen error message rather than repeatedly downloading the same ZIP.

How to remove or replace the theme

To return to Chrome’s default appearance, open Settings → Appearance and use Reset to default under Theme, where available. You can also choose another theme from the Chrome Web Store. Menu labels may vary by Chrome version.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install the ZIP without extracting it?

No. The Load unpacked option expects an extracted folder containing the theme manifest and supporting files.

Do I need to publish my theme to the Chrome Web Store?

No. You can load a theme you created for your own desktop browser without publishing it to the store.

Does this work in Chrome on a phone?

No. The desktop Load unpacked workflow is not available in Chrome for Android or iOS.

Is Developer mode required?

Yes, for this manual Load unpacked method. Only use it for files you created or trust.
