First: Chrome background or Chrome theme?
Your Chrome background is the image or design shown on the New Tab page. A Chrome theme can also change the colors of the browser frame, tabs, and toolbar. If you only want to change the image behind the New Tab search area, Chrome's built-in customization is usually the quickest option.
These instructions apply to Google Chrome on a desktop computer. Menu names and available designs can differ across Chrome versions, operating systems, and managed profiles.
Method 1: Change your New Tab background in Chrome
- Open Google Chrome on your computer.
- Open a new tab.
- Find Customize Chrome, often shown as a button or icon near the bottom-right of the New Tab page.
- Open the background customization options, if available.
- Choose a background collection, an individual image, or another offered design.
- Close the customization panel and open a new tab to check the result.
Depending on your Chrome version, the customization panel may also include color and theme settings. A browser extension that replaces your New Tab page can hide Chrome's usual background controls.
Method 2: Use your own photo as the background
- Open a new tab and select Customize Chrome.
- Look for an option such as Upload an image or Upload from device.
- Choose a photo stored on your computer.
- Check how it looks on the New Tab page. If it is cropped awkwardly, try another image with more space around the subject.
For best results, start with a clear landscape-oriented image. Images with a busy center can make New Tab shortcuts or the search area harder to distinguish.
Want your photo to match the whole browser? Our free Chrome Theme Builder uses your image as the New Tab background and suggests matching colors for tabs, the toolbar, and the browser frame.
Create a Theme From My Photo →Method 3: Create a full Chrome theme from your background
Chrome's background picker is ideal for a simple image change. If you want a coordinated design across more of the browser, use our free Chrome Theme Builder.
- Upload a JPG, PNG, or WebP image to the builder.
- Let the Auto wizard choose matching browser colors.
- Adjust the frame, tab, and toolbar colors manually if you prefer.
- Choose how the background image should be positioned.
- Inspect the illustrative live preview and download your theme ZIP.
- Extract the ZIP and follow the custom theme installation guide to load it in desktop Chrome.
The builder creates a theme package; it does not automatically install the theme. Chrome's own New Tab customization and locally installed themes may behave differently, so choose the workflow that suits your goal.
Tips for choosing a Chrome background image
- Use a landscape photo: Wide images generally fit desktop screens more naturally.
- Leave breathing room: Keep important faces, text, or details away from edges that might be cropped.
- Consider readability: A calmer area behind New Tab controls can make the page easier to use.
- Check the crop: Different window sizes and screen ratios may show different portions of the image.
- Use images you have permission to use: Personal photos or your own artwork are good starting points.

How to remove or replace a Chrome background
Open a new tab, return to Customize Chrome, and choose a different background or the available default option. If a full Chrome theme is controlling the appearance, you may also need to open Settings → Appearance and use the theme reset option. The precise labels can vary.
Chrome background not changing? Try these checks
- Confirm you're on Chrome's New Tab page: A website's background is not controlled by Chrome's New Tab settings.
- Check for a New Tab extension: Extensions can replace the standard page and its customization controls.
- Check your Chrome profile: Customization can differ between profiles.
- Try another image: If an upload fails, test a common image format such as JPG or PNG.
- Look for managed-browser restrictions: School or workplace settings may limit customization.
- Check whether a theme is active: A theme may influence the appearance independently of your background choice.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change my Chrome background for free?
Yes. Chrome's built-in New Tab customization options are free. Our Chrome Theme Builder is also free to use.
Can I set a different background for every tab?
Chrome's standard New Tab customization is not designed to assign a different photo to each individual tab. Extensions may offer other behaviors, but check their permissions and trustworthiness before installing them.
Why does my Chrome background look cropped?
The visible area depends on your browser window and screen shape. Try a wider image or one with the subject closer to the center.
Does changing my Chrome background change my bookmarks?
No. Background customization changes appearance, not your saved bookmarks.
Can I use the same instructions on my phone?
No. These steps describe desktop Chrome; mobile Chrome has different appearance options and does not support desktop theme packages in the same way.
Go beyond a simple background. Turn your favorite image into a complete Chrome theme with automatically matched colors.
